Taking custody of digital assets begins with one simple principle: your recovery phrase is the key, not a password to share. When setting up a hardware wallet, obtain the device directly from the manufacturer or an authorized seller, then follow the current instructions on the manufacturer’s official website. Check the device for tampering before connecting it, and install companion software only from verified official sources.
During initialization, create a PIN on the device itself and write the recovery phrase on paper in the order shown. Confirm each word using the device prompts. Never photograph the phrase, type it into a website, store it in cloud notes, or give it to anyone claiming to offer support. Genuine support teams do not need it.
Before approving a transaction, read the asset, destination, and amount on the wallet’s screen; a computer display alone can be altered. Start with a small test transfer if appropriate and keep firmware and companion apps current using official channels. Store recovery materials privately, protected from fire, water, and casual access, and consider a carefully planned backup location.
Self-custody gives you control, but also responsibility. Take time to understand recovery, verify every action, and seek trusted documentation when uncertain.
